Toxic Positivity

Here is a little story of what inspired this piece:

Back in high school, I was consumed by the desire to feel like I had my life together. Weakness was a fear of mine, so feeling any sort of struggle was not an option.

I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle it on my own, but instead, I ran myself closer and closer to burnout. I think the only things that kept me going were positivity quotes from my Pinterest boards.

These magical words of wisdom somehow tricked me into thinking that I could simply choose to be happy all of the time.

What I didn't fully understand was that everyone goes through their own struggles and pain, and it is important to acknowledge these situations no matter how "big" or "small" they seem.

Yes, it is great to have a positive outlook on life, but it should not hide the pain or true feelings that may live underneath the flowers and smiley faces.

I hope this cute, funny cartoon reminds you that there actually is such a thing as pain!

Here are some ways to cope when you notice toxic positivity:

  1. Practice Mindfulness- Take a moment to accept all emotions that you are feeling.

  2. Express what you feel- Write down what is going on in your head, record a voice memo if you don't feel like writing, or get your thoughts out in any way that works best for you.

  3. Avoid common toxic positivity quotes/media- If those Pinterest pins are invalidating your true feelings, cut them out!!

  4. Understand that change doesn't happen immediately- Be patient with yourself, and make the choice to be honest with how you are feeling.
